Team Dumas Wins Timmins District Mine Rescue Competition
TIMMINS, 14 May, 2015 – Dumas Contracting Ltd. (“Dumas”) proves to be a leader in emergency preparedness, winning this year’s Timmins District Mine Rescue Competition held May 7 and 8, 2015. Dumas was announced as the overall winner of this annual competition, based on the Mine Rescue Team response to a mock emergency scenario. This is only the second time in Ontario’s mining history that a mining contractor will represent their district at the provincial Ontario Mine Rescue Competition to be held in Thunder Bay, Ontario June 11 and 12, 2015.
Mine Rescue Competitions began in 1950 as a way to ensure all mine rescue members in Ontario are trained to the same high standards. The competition is an important learning experience through which teams can bring knowledge back to their families and to the mines in which they work. The competition includes not only a simulated mine emergency, but also a written knowledge test as well as a competition for technicians.
As a relative newcomer to the competition, winning in their district is an honour for the Dumas Mine Rescue Team. The team demonstrated their dedication to fully understanding Mine Rescue policies and procedures by completing an intense two-week training program. Their training included practice using special equipment and performing advanced first aid treatments, ensuring the rescuers were ready to tackle any situation.
"Our success is a direct result of the commitment and dedication that each member has contributed to the team, and the outstanding support we received from management throughout our training. The long hours spent studying at home in the evenings and Sundays spent doing field test at the mine rescue station have proven successful not only in perfecting our emergency response skills, but also in creating everlasting memories and friendships!” says Shawn Rideout, Mobile Maintenance Supervisor at Dumas and team Captain.
“Dumas is extremely proud and appreciative of the team’s effort,” stated Wayne Mohns, Dumas’ Vice President of Canadian Operations. “Mine rescue builds competency and leadership – both individually and throughout our organization and mine projects. It is reassuring to know that we have these capable individuals available for response year-round at our various client sites.”
In addition to placing first in the Timmins district competition, team Dumas also took home the Joe MacInnes Award for the best team score on the written exam, and team member Yannick Marchand was named Rookie of the Year.
